A Crop/La Presse/Radio-Canada Opinion Poll on the Reason(s) for the Resignation of Lucien Bouchard

[Note from the editor: This survey poll was conducted by telephone to 612 people by the CROP organization for La Presse and Radio-Canada between January 12 and January 14, 2001. The margin of error for a survey of this size is 4%, 19 times out of 20. While the same poll showed a high degree of support for Lucien Bouchard (72%), it demonstrated that Quebecers did not necessarily accept the reasons given by Bouchard for his resignation. They strongly suggest that other factors might also apply.]

"In your opinion, what was the MAIN factor in the resignation of Lucien Bouchard?"

The failure of sovereignty*16%
The Michaud affair8%
The desire to spend more time with his family**25%
Tensions within his party***25%
Success of the Liberals****8%
A combination of factors9%

* This was one of the reasons given by Bouchard for his resignation.

** This was also a reason given by Bouchard for his resignation.

***Apparent reference to the pressures of the hardliners within his party on the linguistic and sovereignty issues. Bouchard was a moderate frequently confronted by radicals within his party.

**** Probable reference to the greater success of the Liberal Party in Quebec in the last federal elections and to the decline of the Bloc Québécois.
